SpiritsKouichi is the Legendary Warrior of Darkness, meaning he has both the human and beast spirits in his possession. The anime uses a more cartoonish spelling when compared to the kanji.
Originally five Spirits were left to Cherubimon before he was turned evil by Lucemon. Cherubimon then set out to find Digimon hosts and gave them the four Spirits. Cherubimon was not able to find a Digimon host for the Spirit of Darkness because the spirit would reject them. After Kouichi had fallen down the stairs in the human world Cherubimon brought his spirit to the Digital World. There he gave fused Kouichi with the Spirits of Darkness, which he had tainted with his own power. Duskmon was born, but had no memories of his previous life as a human. Soon after battle several times with Kouji, Cherubimon gave Duskmon the Beast Spirit of Darkness, which allowed Duskmon to spirit evolve to Velgmon. Once Velgmon was defeated Kouichi returned to his human form. He would receive his D-Scanner when the light from Kouji's D-Scanner purified the Spirits of Darkness.
